Spring cleaning

Winter

The market location has changed and I haven't been able to visit the winter offerings yet. Sarah and I have been trying new recipes and perfecting others however.

I bake two simple loaves of bread every weekend to cut back on buying bread, using the bread machine, and purchasing the more expensive flour. We have found a great recipe for the sweet potatoes and working on the butternut squash.

We are both training for a 10K in April, so perhaps we will start baking homemade energy bars?

I'm also looking into local textiles for the winter patchwork quilt.

Seasons change

It's becoming apparent the seasons are changing. The weather is an instant indicator. I'm starting to see more gourds and fewer herbs at the market and harvest time is upon us.

This week I bought some Thai peppers, so they're called, tomatoes, apples, cilantro, and the usual cheese. Sarah and I have decided to start meal planning. Living in the same city will make meals easier and grocery bills lighter, though for the moment, it's still a grand idea.

I've started shopping more at the local co-op store. Buying items in bulk is much cheaper. The difference in most cases is usage. Case and point; a few weeks ago Sarah and I went to a 70-family garage sale. We had lots of sweet purchases, one of which was a $5 bread machine. Packaged yeast for the bread is not a cheap ingredient. Our first batch of bread yeast cost us $2.09 for four loaves. The yeast at the co-op is $3.49/lb. That's a tremendous savings. The cost of bread will go up but we will be eating healthier, supporting local growers, and saving in other areas.

It's obvious this isn't going as well as planned. I am still shopping and eating local, but my plans on updating and writing here has not been as scheduled as I had hoped. Now that my computer is repaired at home, I should be able to get this back on track.

Market Report

This week was a pantry stock week. I purchased many once-a-month items and skipped buying in bulk this week. I still have a few non-local items in the house that I have to eat before I am wholly reliant on what I get at the market.

I made a quick list of things I would need before leaving the house. I figured I would be purchasing my milk and butter at the Rochester Produce store but thought I might get lucky at the market. I went to the ATM, met Sarah at the market and walked about pricing what items I had on my list and adding others I might want later.

I had intentions to purchase flour and making my own bread from scratch; I figure the yeast could be another exception. Their flour vs. bread cost was only a dollar so I purchased the bread in lieu. I plan on purchasing the flour on my next visit to see what the $4 price tag yields. It could be worth the effort if I can get two loaves for the price of one.

Tomatoes were by far the most available item. A lady from church spoke of a tomato lady who knows her Big Boys from her Beefsteaks. I'm not sure of the quality difference but I did like the option to purchase nearly twice the amount of split tomatoes for $1 less. I knew that I would be using them right away, so the split option was best for me.

Potatoes of every sort and shape could be found every eight steps. Prices were dictated by size and I figure the smaller reds are easier to manage when cooking for one. I did not find any yams or sweet potatoes so I placed them on my list for next week.

Other finds for next week were cauliflower; $3, basket of okra; $3, and, to my surprise, baskets of jalapeƱos; $2. I have a friend here in the office who has plenty of chili peppers to share so I skipped on the jalas.

I remembered to take a picture this week of a few purchases. I couldn't wait to try the bread, as you can see.



I have most of my shopping list completed and I am well within my grocery budget. Next week's report will be in Minneapolis/St. Paul and include more bulk purchases. Sarah has a few local markets tagged out for us. They are well within my 100-mile range and should promise more options.

Day One - 08/10/08

There are many firsts in life that we are blessed to share with others. It's not often that you get to actually write about them. Today was the first day of my 100-mile diet. I have a few non-local pantry items that I'm trying to eat first so breakfast was the only local meal of the day. I had eggs and toast with unsalted butter and apple/choke cherry jam.

Lunch was a wild rice soup package I've had in my pantry for some time now. I hate wasting food and the box was opened from a previous thought of consumption so I couldn't donate it to a food shelf. It was decent but not my idea of tasty.

I spent the rest of the day in the kitchen cooking and preparing for the week. Sarah was gracious enough to clean the kitchen while I was busy in prep. I simmered the tomatoes down into a sauce and boiled the chicken. I saved the broth for soup and de-boned the chicken for sandwiches and other meals this week. I hope to make this a Sunday ritual. It should make my week a lot less hurried and serve for better meal planning.

I missed dinner due to my evening of cooking. Odd how that happens.
